Abstract

The Correlation Between Students’ Social anxiety Disorder And Their Speaking Ability Of The First Grade students At MA Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar In Academic Year 2020/2021. Thesis. Keywords: Correlation, Social anxiety disorder, Speaking Ability There were a large number of studies found concerning on the relationship between students’ anxiety and their speaking ability. Meantime, anxiety includes a wide range of aspects. Thus, more detailed and specific research is required. In this research, the researcher was interested in doing a study that focused on one type of anxiety that is social anxiety and one English skill which is speaking because most of previous studies are focused in the anxiety only. Since it too broad, the researcher interested to make it more spesific by initiated this research which focused on one aspect of anxiety called social anxiety disorder. In addition, many children and adolescents at school age who experience social anxiety and it is increased in Indonesia itself (Hasibuan et.al., 2014). This condition might influence students speaking ability since they are forced to speak English language which they are not commonly used at school or their society. From this circumtances, the researcher interested to conduct a research about the correlation between students’ social anxiety disorder and their speaking ability. Methodologically, the researcher applies correlational research design by using quantitative approach. There are two variables in this research which are students’ social anxiety disorder as predictor and students’ speaking ability as outcome. The data of students’ speaking ability was obtained from students’ speaking test scores and for students’ social anxiety disorder is by distributed questionnaire by Dr. Michael R. Liebowitz called Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents, self-report version (LSAS-CA-SR). The researcher used all the first grade students of MA Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar as the population of the research. Then, the researcher chose X MIPA 3 class that consists of 43 students as the sample that have been taken using non-probability sampling where the probability of any member being selected for a sample cannot be calculated. The research finding of the students’ social anxiety disorder score is 76, 95 that classified in medium level. The mean of the speaking test score is 83, 9 which is categorized in high. In addition, the result of the correlation calculation by using SPSS indicated that the value of correlation is 0.392 which was interpreted as a significant positive correlation in low level.in low level. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students’ social anxiety disorder and their speaking ability of the first grade students at MA Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar in academic year 2020/2021.
