Keywords: effectiveness, cartoon movie, listening ability As one of four skills in English, listening takes an important role in communication. That is why this skill need to be mastered by students. In its practice, when students listen to, for example, a story, they are insisted to be able to grasp ideas or contents of the story that has been listened. It has been found some cases that many students practiceto listen spoken English without knowing it’s. Therefore, the use of a certain media in teaching listening is necessary.One of the media that can be used to help students improve their listening skill is Cartoon Movie. Cartoon movie is a movie that looks funny. It presents many statements and dialogues that offers some ideas. Moreover, through the use of Cartoon Movie the students can improve students ability for it provides a funny situation. So, this study aims to verify whether or not Cartoon Movie is effective used in teaching listening to improve students’ listening ability. The formulation of the research problem was “ Is there are significant difference score of the students’ listening ability taught by using cartoon movie of the first grade students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung?”. The study employed a Two Groups Quasi-experimental research with quantitative approach. The population was the First Grade Students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung. By using a purposive sampling, the selected sample were the two classes with similar skill in listening. The sample of this research was class VII-J which consisted32 students and class VII-I consisted32 students. The data were collected by administering pre-test and post-test. Two kinds of listening test formatswere used; objective test in the form of multiple choice consisted of 20 items and fill the blank consisted of 10 items and subjective test in the form of essay consisted of 6 items. The data collected from administering the pre test and post test were analyzed by using Independen Sample T-Test with SPSS 22.0 version. The finding revealed that Cartoon Movie was effective used to improve students’ listening skill. It was shown from the result of statistical computation of the result of post-test of experimental and control group. The T-test result showthat the significant value was 0, 018 and it was less than 0,05. It meant that there was significant difference score between experimental and control group. The result implied that Cartoon Movie was effectively used to help students improve their listening skill. Moreover, the effectiveness of the Cartoon Movie was also supported by difference improvement of mean score from pre-test to post-test between experimental and control group. The mean score of pre-test of the experiment group was 76,28 and the mean score of the post-test was 83,09. So the improvement was 6,81. Meanwhile, the mean score of pre-test of the control group was 72,62 and the mean score of the post-test was 76,53 . So the improvement was 3,91. The data above indicated that the improvement mean score from pre-test to post-test of the experimental group was bigger than that of in the control group.
