English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Key Words: English Teacher, Strategies, Confidence, Speaking Skills Speaking is one element of communication. This shows that one of the effective skills of doing communication is speaking. Beside, speaking is one of the important skills that must be mastered by all English students. And self confidence is a person's confidence in all the strengths they have and self confidence that makes him able to achieve various targets in his life. In mastering speaking skill, there is some element that influence it. One of element is teacher‟s strategies. Students will master this skills also because of English Teacher teaching process. Based on that statement, English teachers also must have strategies to develop confidence their students' speaking skills. That is why, studying how the English teacher's strategies in teaching speaking was interesting. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) how the strategies used by the English teacher in developing student‟s confidence in speaking skill indoor activities and outdoor activities at the eighth grade of MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar?” The purposes of this research were: 1) to know how strategies used by the English teacher in developing student‟s confidence in speaking skill indoor activities and outdoor activities at the eighth grade of MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar. The research method: 1) the research design of this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) data source of the research was English teacher as the subject, 3) the method of collecting data was observation and interview, 4) technique of verification was triangulation methodologically and triangulation sources, 5) technique of data analysis was data reductions, data display and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the strategies in teaching speaking are discussion telling story and debates strategy. Based on this study, these strategies were effective in teaching speaking skills because they could help students improve and develop students in expressing their opinions and thoughts. In addition, this strategy is also used to develop self-confidence in front of their peers in speaking, even indoor activities or outdoor activities. Students who experience less confidence in speaking skills will develop more confidence in their speaking skills. By using this strategy the teacher will find it easier to provide material to students.
