ABSTRACT Putri, Amalia. NIM. 12203183022. 2022. The Effectiveness of Spotify Music Application in Teaching Vocabulary, Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Key word: Effectiveness, Teaching Vocabulary, Spotify Music Application Vocabulary is a fundamental language component for students to obtain when learning a foreign language because it helps them master language abilities such as reading, speaking, writing, and listening. Students with a good vocabulary have better language abilities than students with a limited vocabulary. As a result, teaching vocabulary becomes a top priority in education. However, many students struggle with vocabulary learning. Because the media employed is dull and uninteresting, teacher need engaging media to teach vocabulary. Because a relaxing and enjoyable environment was required to teach vocabulary, the researcher employed songs from the Spotify Music Application which contains a variety of features, including digital music, and podcasts. The purpose of this study was to see if songs from the Spotify Music App are effective at teaching vocabulary.The statement of the research problem in this research was "Is the use of the Spotify music application effective in teaching vocabulary?”. Research method: 1) this study uses a quasi-experimental with a quantitative approach as the research design, 2) the population of this study is the students of class X MAN 2 Nganjuk, 3) the sample of this research is the students of class X IPS 1 with a total of 31 students (as the experimental class) and class X IPS 2 with 35 students (as the control class), 4) the instrument of this research used a test, 5) the data analysis of this study used the independent sample t-test. The results of this study showed that the use of songs from the Spotify music application is effectively used in teaching vocabulary. The effectiveness of the use of songs from the Spotify music application can be seen in the following points: 1) the mean of pre-test score for the experimental class was 46.21 and the mean of post-test score was 90.69, the gained of the mean score was 44.48. 2) the mean pre-test score for the control class was 45.67 and the mean of post-test score was 53.00, the gained of mean score was 7.33. 3) The results of the independent sample t-test with a significance level of 0.05 showed a significance value (sig.2 tailed) 0.00 which means it is smaller than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05), which means H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. These results indicated that there is a significant difference in scores for students who are taught with the Spotify music application and students who are taught using conventional methods. In conclusion, in terms of teaching vocabulary, the Spotify music app is more effective and innovative than the traditional method.
