Abstract
ABSTRACT Adriyanti, Nadia Farah. NIM 12203183061. 2022. The Correlation Between Frequency of Watching English Movie and The Listening Comprehension Achievement of 8th Grade Students in SMP Negeri 1 Kauman. Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Key Terms: Correlation, English Movie, Listening Comprehension Achievement Listening is an invisible, active process of hearing what the speaker says in order to construct and negotiate meaning. Students' listening abilities may be taught in a variety of ways. Numerous studies have already shown that watching English-language films has a substantial effect on listening comprehension. So, it is important to examine the correlation between English movie watching and listening comprehension performance. This study has the following research question: is there a correlation between the frequency with which eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kauman watch English films and their ability to understand what they hear? The purpose of this research is thus to determine whether the frequency with which eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kauman watch English films correlates with their listening comprehension skills. This study employed a correlational design with a questionnaire and a test as the research instrument. Purposive sampling was employed for this research, hence 30 eighth graders from VIII A and VIII B at SMP Negeri 1 Kauman were sampled. To count and analyse the data collected from the questionnaire and test scores, researchers employed Spearman Rho formula. This study's findings revealed a coefficient correlation value of 0.396, indicating a low correlation in a positive direction. It indicates that only several pupils who spend a lot of time watching movies in English have a higher listening success score. Moreover, the significance value of 0.030 is lower than 0.05 significance level, which means there is significant correlation between the number of times students watch English movies and their listening ability. In other words, students' listening skills are not always affected by how often they watch English movies.
