Abstract

ABSTRACT Andika, Rifky Rachmad Agung Registered Number Student. 12203183188. “The Difficulties of English Students at State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung in Doing Test of English Proficiency”. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullsh Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords : Students difficulties, Test of English Proficiency. The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test to measure a students’ mastery of English. This test has three parts; Listening Comprehension, Written Structure & Expression, and Reading Comprehension. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung has its own proficiency test to measure students' proficiency in English. This test is commonly called the TOEP Test (Test of English Proficiency) this test has a similar instrument with the TOEFL. English students faced some difficulties in doing this test. It can be seen from the data obtained from the score results released by P2B (Language Development Center). A total of 120 English students from 257 students who took the TOEP Test, got low scores. It can be said that as many as 47% of English students did not pass this TOEP test. Eventhough they have passed advanced grammar courses, reading comprehension and listening comprehension. This means that they face difficulties in doing the TOEP Test which is marked by 120 English students who get low scores. The formulation of the research problems were : 1) What are the classification of difficulties English Students at State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung in Doing Test of English Proficiency? 2) How do the English Students of State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung cope with the difficulties in doing Test of English Proficiency?. The design of this research was a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were English students in the 2018 academic year and the test was conducted in 2020. The subjects consisted of 6 students who scored low or below 400 and 2 students who scored above 400 for comparison. Researchers used interviews and documentation as instruments of this research. Data analysis in this research is by classifying data, condensation data, displaying data, and drawing conclusions. Finally, triangulation is used to obtain saturated data. The results of this study should there were found several difficulties experienced by English students in doing the TOEP test. Where researchers classify it into 2, namely linguistic difficulties and non-linguistic difficulties. In linguistic difficulties, there are several difficulties faced by English students, including: 1) Main Idea, 2) Understanding Vocabulary, 3) Finding Conclusions, 4) Knowing Vocabulary in Spoken Language, 5) Recognizing Idioms and Slang, 6) Students' Feel When the Native Speaker Speaks, 7) Understanding Posodic Elements, 8) Transferring Meaning, 9) Mis-analysis, 10) Hypercorrection and 11) Unknown Vocabulary. In non-linguistic difficulties, the researcher found several problems experienced by English students, including 1) Managing Time and 2) Technical problems. The researcher also found out how English students overcome difficulties in doing the TOEP test. In the reading session, students have difficulty understanding vocabulary, English students deal with it by translating it using the context of the text. In the listening session, they had difficulty when the native speakers of this TOEP test. The solution to this is to listen carefully to native speakers, It means that the they listen fully and prioritize what thw native said. In addition, English students experience poor preparation, and the way to overcome this is to prepare everything in advance. In addition, English students also experience several different technical obstacles, the way to overcome them is to manage their feelings so as not to panic. The conclusion of the study showed the difficulties that affect English students when doing the TOEP test and the way they cope with some of these difficulties. These difficulties are classified into two parts, linguistic difficulties and non-linguistic difficulties. These two difficulties cause English students to get low grades. However they have tried to overcome some of the difficulties and problems they face in their own way. Therefore, students are need to apply more strategies, and universities are need to motivate them through lecturers and build their awareness to use more strategies when doing TOEP. In addition, careful preparation such as conducting similar tests and preparing all the necessities is very necessary, so that similar incidents do not happen again.
