ABSTRACT Utami, Hesti. Student Registered Number.3213113080. 2015. A Study on Teachers’ Efforts in Developing Their Professionalism at SMAN 01 Ngunut. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords: English teacher, professional teacher. Indonesian, English is taught from kindergarten until university level. It is learned to facilitate students in order to increase their skill and developing their knowledge about English. The role of teacher in teaching English is very important. Teacher as the pioneer of successful teaching has to have good competence to do the task of educational. Therefore, as the professional teachers, they have good pedagogic, professional, personal, and social competence in teaching and learning. In developing teacher’s professionalism they should have talent, experience and handiness of approaching the students to make the class enjoyable, relaxing and interesting to them, so that, they will grasp the lessons excitedly and interactively. Based on the explanation above, the researcher is interested to find out the efforts of English selected teacher at SMAN 1 Ngunut Tulungagung. The formulation of the research problem is: What are the efforts of certified and non-certified English teachers in developing their professionalism? The objective of this research is: to know the efforts from certified and non-certified English teachers in developing their professionalism. Research method: 1) the research design was descriptive qualitative 2) the informants in this research were selected teachers and their students, 3) Data in this research were information obtained from interview conducted by the researcher to the selected teachers and their students, from field note, observation, and documentation, 4) data collection were using interview guide, observation sheet, field note, and making documentation. The result showed that the selected teachers at SMAN 1 Ngunut Tulungagung had some efforts in developing their professionalism. Furthermore, they meet standard of academic qualifications and competence of teachers. They applied those competences in teaching English like pedagogy competence; they plan their teaching by providing syllabus and making daily lesson plan. Before teaching, they prepared themselves by reading the material and made some list of question that given to their students. Then, to become professional teacher they joined some seminar, training, and workshop. In seminar and workshop teacher got many experiences about teaching and learning. Trough seminar, teacher can exchange their experience, developing their material, so that the teaching learning not monotonous. Furthermore, the made some literary in built their professionalism. To improve their skill, all selected teachers make literary about education because all of them knew that as a teacher they must increase their knowledge. From all the description above, it can be concluded that all the selected teachers at SMAN 01 Ngunut have some efforts in developing their professionalism and they always tried to become a good teacher and professional teacher.
