Keywords: Characteristics, Verbal Interaction, Teacher’s Strategies Verbal interaction is very important in teaching and learning process in the classroom. Verbal communication refers to sending or receiving a message through sounds and languages. The teacher and the students need to have opportunity to try out a variety of teaching. They get their competences by listening to the teacher and the students, and communicating with the teacher and the students. Furthermore, concerning the issues above, this study analyzes the interactions between the teacher and students, which occurs in the classroom interaction for getting the real evidence and implication to student talk. Concering the issues above, this study was analyzed the interaction between the teacher and the students, focusing on the characteristics and teacher strategies to make verbal interaction. The aims of this study were to know what are the characteristics of verbal interaction between English teacher and students in the clasroom and to know how teacher’s strategies to make verbal interaction. This research was descriptive qualitative reseacrh, while the technique of collecting data was interview teacher and students. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive method. Data of this research came from interviews, which was gathered through several techniques of data collection. The data of this research were information about the characteristics and strategies employed by an English teacher during teaching and learning process at SMPN 3 Kalidawir. In this study, researchers used the analysis are carried out interactively and take place continuously until complete. That verbal interaction between teacher and ttudents occurs during the process of learning English, then the characteristics of verbal interactions that often occur include asking question, lecturing, giving direction, accept feeling. And also from these characteristics it can be concluded that teachers often use public interaction type. To streamline the verbal interaction process, the teacher uses several strategies including the multimedia method, group discussion, and student presentation. To streamline the verbal interaction process, the teacher uses a multimedia method strategy, such as explaining material through power points and animated videos, this strategy makes students not easily bored during the learning process. The next is the group discussion strategy, the application of this strategy the teacher can see the interaction between students who help each other and discuss completing their assignments. the last strategy is student presentation, the teacher uses this strategy to train students to be more confident in speaking in public. This research still have limitation. It will be very interesting if the further researcher can analysed verbal interaction using different point of view and explore it more detail. Moreover, the further researcher may try to analyse verbal interaction using Brown Interaction Analysis System.
