ABSTRACT Mawarti Wulan, Dira. Student Registered Number. 3213113009. 2015. Teacher Practices in Facilitating Students to be Active in Studying English at SMPN 1 Karangrejo. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Susanto, S.S, M.Pd. Keywords : Active, Practices, Facilitating In classroom activity, learning English needs students’ participation. The students should involve themselves to any activities set by teacher. Hence, the teacher has responsibility to facilitate students’ participation. By facilitating the students, practically, there will no teacher’s domination during the process of teaching and learning. The statement of research problem were : 1) What practices are done by English teacher of SMPN1 Karangrejo in facilitating students to be more active in studying English ? and 2) What are the advantages of each of the teacher’s practices toward students’ learning ? Based on the research problem above, the objective of this research : 1) To know practices done by English teacher to make students to be active in studying English, 2) To know the advantages of each of the teacher’s practices toward students’ learning. The method of this research was descriptive design with qualitative approach. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted observation, interview and documentation. The observation was done by the researcher in collecting data about the practices used by the teacher in studying English and the advantages toward students’ learning. Meanwhile, the interview was intended to know the practices of English teacher and the advantages. In other words, the method was used also to strengthen teacher’s practices and the advantages. Finally, documentation was done to know teacher practices. The result of the research showed that to stimulate the students to be active in learning English, the teacher did the following activities the advantages of each of the teacher’s practices toward students’ learning : a) giving task and recitation, b) giving story to be discussed, c) using song and movie, d) applying role play, e) applying question answer section, f) giving reward in the form of point or score, g) giving motivation to students. Meanwhile the practices done by the teacher offer, the following advantage : (a) the students can improve their language inputs vocabulary, (b) the students can learn grammar in different context, (c) the students can learn by doing, (d) the students can learn together in group, (e) the students can improve their vocabulary, and (f) the students get horizon the importance of mastering English in the future.
