Abstract

English is one of international languages which are most widely used in all over the world. English language has become an international language. Learning English cannot be separated from learning strategies. Learning strategies is activity that must be carried out by the teachers and students so that learning objectives can be achieved effectively and efficiently. This study aims to find out the strategy used by students in learning English. In addition this study also aims to investigate the supporting factors for students. Source data from this study were five students who have top 5 rank from eleventh grade class from MAN 3 Blitar. The instruments of this research are interview guide. Data analysis for this research used the theory of Miles and Huberman theory (1994:10) Based on data analysis, the researcher concluded that there are several types of learning strategies used by students, including direct strategy and indirect strategy. Direct strategy have three classification, there is memory strategy, cognitive strategy, and compensation strategy. Indirect strategy also have three classification, there are metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. In addition, the researcher also concluded that there are two supporting factors in learning English, including internal factors, and external factors. Internal factor have three subsets, there are intelligence, interest motivation learning, and perseverance. The external factor also have three subsets, there are support from family, school, and society environment.
