Abstract

ABSTRACT Thesis with the title “The Implementation of Public Speaking Program For English Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Panca Sakti University - Bekasi” is written by Widya Astuti guided by Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd and Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nur Hayati, SS, M.Pd. Keywords: Speaking, Teaching speaking, and Public Speaking This research was motivated by the students of English Department at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in PANCA SAKTI UNIVERSITY BEKASI which have duty to prepare become a professional teacher who has ability of conducting teaching students of junior and senior high school. Besides having good ability in managing the English classroom, students have to acquire good written and oral English ability. Meanwhile The student’s ability in speaking is quite low. The low of speaking ability can be seen among students because there are not motivation and interesting in teaching learning to improve the student’s speaking ability. The formulation of the problem in this research were: (1) How is the Implementation of Public Speaking Program in Teaching Speaking at English Department of PANCA SAKTI UNIVERSITY - BEKASI?; (2) How are the students’ perception towards the public speaking program? This study used qualitative research design. The data collection was conducted on May 24th, 2022 at sixth semester. The data were collected from 20 students of English Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of PANCA SAKTI UNIVERSITY - BEKASI. The instrument which was used to collect the data was interview. The interview was distributed to 20 students of English Education Department in academic year 2021/2022. The items of the interview were some questions as qualitative interview. The school reserves this public speaking program once a week, and each student is required to provide a speech script in English, which later to be delivered during practice in the classroom. Based on the findings, the implication of this research was to provide rich information and function as a reference for educational practitioners and researchers in Indonesia in teaching speaking through public speaking program by regarding the stages implemented in this research finding. It finds that students gave the positive perception toward the implementation of public speaking program to measure the student’s ability in public speaking and to support their speaking skill. Moreover, the students claimed that they have got many advantages during the implementation of public speaking program.
