Abstract
Learning English as a foreign language for Indonesian students (EFL) has common problems faced by students who do not master English, where there are difficulties when dealing with English, especially students who experience anxiety in aspects such as writing, reading, listening and speaking. Then to reduce writing anxiety, appropriate strategies are needed to motivate and increase students' self-confidence. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) What factors influence students' writing anxiety? 2) What are the strategies used by students to reduce their anxiety? The aims of this study were: 1) To find out the factors that can cause students' writing anxiety 2) To find out the strategies implemented by students to reduce their anxiety. The research design used is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive type. The subjects of this study were 40 students majoring in English education at Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung State Islamic University. The main sample of this study were four students fifth-semester in the Department of English Education at Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University Tulungagung. Research uses interviews as a research instrument. Then this study analyzes the data by reducing data, displaying data, drawing conclusions. This study reveals that there are factors which can cause writing anxiety such as external and internal factors, and time pressure, not confident about her/himself, lack of knowledge, urgent requests, unexpected situations, distant deadlines, personal problems or life events which influence the student writing anxiety. In addition, their writing anxiety is then reduced by some factors, namely collaborating and seeking out experts, creating smaller tasks and short-term goals, embracing reality, and self-strategy. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the writing anxiety factor suffered by students and then after knowing it, students can choose a suitable strategy in overcoming the writing anxiety factor. Matching in choosing the right strategy is useful for reducing anxiety in writing and motivating students to do writing assignments and will affect the results of the written work that students make.
