Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keyword: teacher, motivation strategy, students, learning English Along with technological advances in the modern era English serves as the language of instruction in the world of education and is even included in the category of compulsory subjects. Motivation is one of the most important factors for successful teaching and learning. So, this is a challenge for English teachers, especially at the junior high school level to motivate their students in learning English. This research includes qualitative case study research and the technique of data analysis using thematic analysis. The purpose of this research is to find out: (1) To describe the motivation strategies does the English teacher use to motivate his students in learning English. (2) To describe the factor trigger English teacher to motivate his students in learning English. The data collection in research are observation, interviews and documentation. The subject in this research are three English teachers and the informant are two students. The activity of obtaining data was carried out at MTs Darul Falah Bendiljati Kulon. The findings in this study indicate that in motivating their students to learn English, the English teacher at MTs Darul Falah uses three strategies, namely: believing on the importance of motivation among students, giving intrinsic motivation to the students, and giving extrinsic motivation to the students. Giving intrinsic motivation is done by: giving prise to the students, providing solutions, describing the importance of learning English, explaining the consequence, supporting learning environment, student choice and goal setting, engaging learning experiences and the last is teachers’ passion and enthusiasm for learning. While giving extrinsic motivation is done by: giving point to the students, telling the good impact of learning English, giving feedback, offering rewards and explaining of getting good grades. Furthermore, the findings in this research also show that the factors trigger English teachers of MTs Darul Falah to motivate their students in learning English are: students’ characteristics, disagreement among students, and ability-based learning activities. Based on the research results, teachers are advised to motivate their students to learn English. And for readers and future researchers so that they can develop the teacher’s strategy in motivating their students to learn English.
