Abstract

There has been a change in learning activities after Covid-19 became a global pandemic. Thechangeoccurring is, among others, that from face to face learning to distance learning through the online process, likethe used of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). Accordingly, the use of CMC goes alongwithitspros and cons. Therefore, this study aims to find out how the use of CMC is in the implementationof distancelearning and how the pros and cons are of the use of CMC in distance learning. This study employedadescriptive method with a survey technique. The data were collected using closed questionnaires distributedthrough Google Form to 324 students. The results show that 89.8% of students prefer face to face learningand only 10.2% of them prefer distance learning. The use of CMC is considered ineffective in suchcoursesasswimming because students are required to practice, in addition to the written material delivered. Threefactors cause the pros and cons in the use of CMC: internal factors, external factors, and contextual factors. External factors include time and family constraints, lack of supports from the surrounding environment, andfinancial problems. Meanwhile, the internal factors are related to discipline and the ability of studentstomanage their time wisely. Besides, contextual factors are more likely found on online applications that arenotfriendly to users, and lack of interactivity.
