Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Key Words: speaking, learning strategy Speaking is one of the important skills that must be mastered by all English students. English is called the International Language and is also the second language of many countries in the world and speaking is a source or tools used to express our feeling and deliver information or the our idea in order another. However, to master speaking is not easy for someone or learner to achieve. Students at SMP 1 Sumbergempol how do they use strategies to get them to speak English. In this case the researcher feels interested in knowing what strategies used by the student of SMP 1 Sumbergempol in learning speaking so that they succeed in speaking English The formulations of the research problems were: 1) How are the students strategies used by the students in learning speaking at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol? 2) what are the contribution of the strategies in learning speaking at SMP 1 Sumbergempol? Research method: 1) the research design of this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) data sources of the research was the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol as the subjects and related documentation, 3) the method of collecting data was interview, and documentation 4) technique of verification was triangulation methodologically, 5) technique of data analysis was data reductions, data display and conclusion drawing. The results showed that: almost all the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol used strategies that proposed by O’Malley and Oxford including cognitive strategies and socio-strategies to improve their speaking. First, strategies used by students. (1) Cognitive strategies, the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol used two strategies as follow: a) Cognitive strategy, students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol use two strategies as follows: a) they are always vocab oriented to memorize vocabulary of songs and conversational sentences through repetition, b) resources, they also translate when they read novels and lyrics. song according to dictionary. (2) In socio-strategies, the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol used two strategies as follow: a) asking question, they always asked their friends about new vocabularies oriented again and sharing with other, b) cooperation with other, they always practice in English in the class and out class. Second, is the contribution of strategies. The contribution of strategies used by the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol. as follow (1) cognitive, the benefits of this strategies as follow: a) students easier in memorizing vocabularies, 2) students more fluency when they communicate with other. (2) Social- strategies,the benefits of this strategies as follow: a) learner enable to get in touch with other people when they learning, b) helps learners encourage their conversation partners.
