Abstract

ABSTRACT Sabitri, Tiana Miyas. Student Registered Number. 12203183064. 2022. The Correlation Between Student’s Habit of Watching Video on Daily Conversation and Listening Achievement. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teaching Training. State Islamis University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah (UIN SATU) Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Sukarsono M.Pd. Keywords: correlation, listening, video, habit of watching video, listening achievement. Listening is an important skill in communication. Developing countries like Indonesia use English as a foreign language, this is often seen as a difficulty for students due to unfamiliarity. Watching videos is useful in practicing habituation in listening. Listening by watching videos with daily conversation content can make it easier for students to improve their abilities. However, the inhibiting factor is that students often feel unfamiliar with things related to English, such as ignorance of pronunciation and vocabulary. To be able to achieve achievement in listening, students need to master pronunciation, vocabulary, and recognize the context being discussed. The formulation of this research is: “Is there any significant correlation between student’s habit of watching video on daily conversation and listening achievement?”. Furthermore, the purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a correlation between student’s habit of watching video on daily conversation and listening achievement. This study aims to find a relationship between students' habits of watching daily video conversations (variable x) and listening achievement (variable y). This research was conducted at SMA N 1 Kauman Tulungagung for the 2022-2023 academic year. The student population, namely all 10th grade students totaling 425 using random sampling with a total sample of 35 students. This research method is quantitative by using a correlation design. The research instrument used questionnaires and tests, then analyzed using the product moment correlation procedure through SPSS 22 to find out whether the two variables were related or not. The results of the analysis show that there is no correlation between the two variables with a correlation coefficient of 0.291. The results of the analysis using the product moment correlation procedure through SPSS 22 show a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.089 which is higher than the significant value (α) of 5% meaning that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is rejected. In conclusion, there is no correlation between the two variables. From these findings, the researcher assumes that the student’s habit of watching videos on daily conversations do not really have an impact on students' achievement in listening. Researchers are also aware that these results have different possibilities based on different research locations and conditions.
