Keywords: Language function, Main characters, The Notebook. Language is a system of communication consisting of sound, words, and grammar or the system of communication used by people in a particular country. In everyday life, people will communicate with others. People communicate each other to share information, ideas, beliefs, emotions, attitudes, even ask, or order something in their daily interactions. They use language in order to fulfill those different purposes. Each purpose can be known as a language function. In learning process, students need media to motivate them in learning and make them easier understanding the material. One of media that can be used to learn language function is a movie. Movie is one of medium in which we can find many language functions through its dialogues. Therefore, this study is conducted to analyze the language functions used by the main characters in the notebook movie. The statement of the research problem was: What kinds of language functions used by the main characters in The Notebook movie?. Then, the objective of the research was to analyze the language functions used by the main characters in The Notebook movie. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. The source of data in this research were the video and the transcript of “The Notebook” movie. This research used document analysis to collect data since the researcher got the data from the transcript of The Notebook movie. The result of this research found that the main characters of The Notebook movie used all the language function based on Cook‟s theory and Jakobson‟s theory. Language functions found based on Cook‟s theory are: emotive function (31 data), directive function (43 data), phatic function (12 data), poetic function (5 data), referential function (50 data), metalinguistic function (4 data), and contextual function (4 data). Meanwhile, the language functions found based on Jakobson‟s theory are: expressive function (31 data), conative function (43 data), phatic function (12 data), poetic function (5 data), referential function (50 data), metalinguistic function (4 data). From all kinds of language functions, the dominant language function used by the main characters is referential function.
