Keywords: Effectiveness, vocabulary, fable Vocabulary mastery is an important ability to support all English skills. Lack of vocabulary can make it difficult for students to learn English. That way, certain learning media or methods are needed to increase students' vocabulary. Learning media can increase students' motivation and also improve their vocabulary. One of the learning media to help students learn vocabulary is fables. This study aims to determine significant differences in students' vocabulary scores before and after being taught using fables at SMPN 2 Ngantru Tulungagung, and to measure the effectiveness of fables in increasing vocabulary mastery. To achieve this goal, the researcher conducted an experimental research. The formulation of the problem in this study is "Is there any significant different score of the eighth graders’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using fable at SMPN 2 Ngantru Tulungagung?" This research was conducted using a quantitative approach with pre-experimental research methods. The population in this study was students of class VIII SMPN 2 Ngantru Tulungagung, the sample in this study was class VIII B SMPN 2 Ngantru Tulungagung, with total number is 26 students. The instrument used in this study was a test in the form of a pre-test and post-test of vocabulary, the data analysis used was a paired sample t-test. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the use of fables is effective in increasing the eighth grade students' vocabulary mastery scores at SMPN 2 Ngantru. This effectiveness is shown by the increase in the average score of students in the pre-test and post-test. From 70.58 it increases to 89.04. Then the results of the paired sample t test show a significance value of 0.000 and less than 0.050 (0.000 < 0.050). It means that there was significant different score in vocabulary of the students before and after being taught using fable. Hence, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So it can be concluded that fables was effective used for increasing vocabulary.
