Perception is a process of summarizing information in the form of experiences about an object or event that occurs to a person. The use of social media is used by some educational institutions to improve student learning in new ways. The habit of using social media can indirectly be used as a means of information, so it is not surprising that currently, language development is running quickly. Various kinds of content in social media make students feel interested and use social media to facilitate them in developing their vocabulary. Vocabulary development is an important thing that a person must master in learning English which is a foreign language for all students in Indonesia. Currently, most students use social media for their needs, especially the use of TikTok and Instagram applications. And there are not many studies that discuss about students’ perceptions on the role of social media in vocabulary development. Because it is important to see students' perceptions of the role of social media, especially on TikTok and Instagram applications in the role of motivation, the role of facilitation, and the negative role of social media in students’ vocabulary development. This study aims to determine students' perceptions on the role of social media, especially on the TikTok and Instagram applications in the vocabulary development of English Education Department students. And the formulation of the problem in this research is: 1. How are students' perception on the role of social media (TikTok and Instagram) in motivating vocabulary learning? 2. What are students' perception of the role of social media (TikTok and Instagram) in facilitating vocabulary development? 3. What are the students' perception on the negative role of social media in their vocabulary development?. This research was conducted using a survey design . This research find the data using questionnaires. The sample of the study was the students of TBI (Tadris English Laguage) UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung Semester 2 to semester 8 with the number of respondents of 60 students who use social media (TikTok and Instagram). The results of the study show that social media give them motivation in vocabulary learning and they are more interested in learning vocabulary by using TikTok and Instagram application. In addition, social media is considered to facilitate their learning in terms of providing media for learning vocabulary, pronouncing vocabulary, and giving them more access to English learning. In contrast to the positive role on social media, the students also perceived some negative role of social media in their vocabulary development. They consider that social media made them accustomed to use slang words and decrease their concentration in learning vocabulary.
