ABSTRACT Kirana, Khalida. NIM. 12203193020. Student’s Language Errors in Writing Personal Recount Text at Eighth Grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd. Keywords: Writing Error, Sources of Errors, Recount Text. Writing is one of the most important skills in the world of education. One of these skills is honed in junior high school. In the eighth grade, students have received learning material about writing texts. The researcher found students who had difficulty writing and found many errors. Therefore, this research was conducted to find the types of errors and the sources of the errors in the personal texts of the eighth grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung. By finding these two problems, the teacher and the student will be able to fix both problems. Based on the case above, the formulation of the problem that emerged in this study was: what types of language errors are made by students in writing personal recount texts at eighth grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung? and what are the sources of language errors made by students in writing personal recount texts at eighth grade of MTsN 2 Tulungagung? The research method used in this study is qualitative research. The source of the data for this study was the eighth-grade students of MTsN 2 Tulungagung and the data in this research is text personal recount and results of interviews with students of eighth grade. The instruments of this research are student writing test data and interviews. Data collection technique are testing of writing and interview and method of data analysis, the researcher use approach error analysis. The results of this study indicate that there are several types of errors that cause errors in personal recount text. The types of errors that appear are capitalization, punctuation, commas, verb tense, word choice, spelling, omitting a word, adding a word, meaning not clear, article, and singular-plural. And the most common error was capitalization. Meanwhile, the sources of errors in personal recount texts made by students were categorized into two categories, namely interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. Interlingual transfer errors are sourced by the students, who are affected by the interference of their mother tongue (Indonesia). The students used the Indonesian syntactic pattern in composing English sentences and translating word by word. Meanwhile, for intralingual transfer error sources like the students forgetting linguistic rules in writing sentences, their use of incorrect grammar, and their lack of knowledge about grammar. This source is classified as intralingual transfer errors due to incomplete applications of rules. Because students are unable to apply rules to contexts even though they have studied the material.
