Abstract

Trisnawati, Rinta Arum. Student Registered Number. 12203193164. 2023. The Effectiveness of Using Podcast from Anchor Application on Students’ Listening Skills of The Eleventh Grade at SMA Negeri 1 Gondang. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: podcast, Anchor application, listening skills. Listening is one of the skills that must be mastered by students when learning English. Listening is the first and most fundamental skill learned before learning other language skills, such as speaking, reading, and writing. Teaching listening can be given to students through various media. Podcasts are one example of media that can be used to teach listening skills. Podcasts are digital audio files available online that can be listened to and downloaded via a computer or smartphone. Through podcasts, students can learn and practice listening independently via their respective smartphones because there are currently many platforms and applications providing podcast services, one of which is the Anchor application. The formulation of the research problem in this research was “Is there any significant difference in scores between students taught before and after using the podcast from the Anchor application?”. This study aimed to determine the significant differences in scores between students taught before and after using podcasts from the Anchor application in eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Gondang. This research used a quantitative approach with an experimental research design, namely a pre-experimental research design. The population in this research were eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Gondang. This study’s sample consisted of 22 students from class 11 MIPA 6. Purposive sampling was used for selecting the sample. The research instrument used was the pre-test and post-test, each consisting of 25 questions in the form of fill-in-the-blanks and multiple choice. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to examine the data because the data did not match the normality assumption. Based on the study’s results, the average pre-test score was 74,91, while the average post-test score was 80,73. This shows a significant gap in scores between students before and after being taught using podcast from the Anchor application. Then, the results of the hypothesis testing show that the significance value (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed)) is lower than alpha (0,000 < 0,05). This means that Ha, which states that there is a significant difference in scores between students taught before and after using the podcast from the Anchor application, was accepted. In contrast, H0, which states no significant difference in scores between students taught before and after using the podcast from the Anchor application, was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that using podcasts from the Anchor application is effective and significantly affects students’ listening skills. In addition, podcasts from the Anchor application can be used as an alternative medium in teaching listening at the high school level.
