Abstract

Pertiwi, Nestiti Lintang. NIM. 12203193082. 2023.The Effectiveness of Mind Mapping Technique Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension in Recount Texts at Eighth Grade Students of MTs Negeri 5 Kediri.Thesis of English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Supervisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Mind-Mapping Techniques. Reading Comprehension. To improve their knowledge and language proficiency, students need to develop the crucial ability of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension skills are needed at the junior high school level, especially in learning recount texts. But in practice, it is often students who have difficulty understanding the text they read. The mind-mapping technique is one that may be used to teach reading comprehension of recount texts. Students may successfully build ideas and organize information using the mind-mapping technique depending on the material they have read. The purpose of this study is to determine the significant differences in reading comprehension test scores between students in the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 5 Kediri before and after being taught using the mind mapping technique. The formulation of the problem in this study is: Is there any significant difference scores on students' reading comprehension in recount text before and after being taught by using the mind-mapping technique at eighth-grade students of MTs Negeri 5 Kediri? A pre-experimental design using a quantitative approach and a one-group pretestposttest design was used to conduct this research. The population consisted of 395 eighth-graders from 10 classrooms at MTs Negeri 5 Kediri. The sample was the eighth G class consisting of 41 students selected by using a purposive sampling technique. A reading comprehension test was the instrument employed in the study. The data for this study were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test using IBM SPSS version 23. The data were gathered through the pre-test and post-test. The results of this study showed that the mean scores before applying the mindmapping technique (59.27) were lower than the mean scores after applying it (72.83). The outcome of the paired sample t-test revealed that the significant value was 0.000 below the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Hence, it can be claimed that H 0 is rejected, while H a is not rejected. Finally, the mind mapping approach is effectively utilized to support students in the eighth grade of MTs Negeri 5 Kediri in reading comprehension of recount texts.
