Abstract

Febriana, Rina. NIM:12203193113. 2023. Comparative Study on Idioms Understanding of Across Gender Among English Student At Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah University Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Sukarsono, M. Pd. Keyword : Idiom, Gender Idiom is a multi-word unit that already exists and is standardized because it is often used in the language of everyday life where the meaning of an idiom cannot be interpreted according to the word that composes it. With the very rapid development of technology, of course idioms would be very important to be understood by everyone, especially students. In understanding this idiom, everyone who learns English has a level and not everyone can easily understand idioms. There is a psychological factor namely gender that affects learning performance and the intelligence potential of male and female students also has an influence in the field of mastery of knowledge. Therefore, with the presence of psychological influence on learning performance and intelligence between male and female students, it would certainly also influence the difference in idiom understanding between male and female students. The formulation of the problem in this research is: "Do male English students better than female English students in understanding idioms at UIN SATU Tulungagung?". Further the purpose of this research is "To find out that male English students do better than female English students in understanding idioms at UIN SATU Tulungagung". This research is comparative quantitative research. The subjects in this research are fourth semester students majoring in English education. From 200 students, 60 students consisting of male students and female students were taken as a research sample using random sampling techniques. The data collection method in this research is a test, with instruments in the form of test questions. The data analysis technique uses the Independent Sample T-test, with the prerequisite test of normality and homogeneity through SPPS 25.0 as the application. From the results of the analysis, the average score for understanding idioms for male students is 73.00 and the average score for understanding idioms for female students is 81.50. This means that the average value of understanding students is higher than the average value of male students. The result of Independent Sample T-test scores of male and female students related to the form idiom have a sig/P value (2-tailed) of 0.002. Because the sig/P value (0.002) ˂ α (0.05), it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. So, there is a significant comparison between male and female students majoring in English Education in understanding idioms at UIN SATU Tulungagung.
