Sokhikha, Nur (12203193132). Describing Pictures Strategy to Improve the Students’ Speaking Ability of the Eighth Grade Students At MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar. Keywords: Describing Picture Strategy, Improve, Speaking Ability This research is motivated by the obtacles encountered in the process of English speaking learning, These problems are inadequate fluency, inadequate vocabulary, poor pronunciation and incorrect grammar. To support speaking skills in students, a learning process is needed using effective and interesting methods to improve speaking skills. The researcher chose the description picture model to improve speaking skills because the picture is a real object and is not difficult to found. Pictures can be used to stimulate students to be more active. So, they are used to expressing their ideas in English by describing a picture. This research has a focus problem namely, how can describing pictures strategy improve the students’ speaking ability of the eighth grade students at MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar. This research was Classroom Action Research, aimed to improve the students’ speaking ability by using describing pictures as strategy and to found out whether the students’s ability. The sample of this study was VIII-D which consist of 26 students of MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar. This research was done in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps namely, planning, action, observation and reflection. In cycle 1, the process of learning to speak english is carried out in groups but in cycle 2 in individually. In cycle 1&2 used the loose picture and evaluation only in each cycle but in cycle 3 used picture that have a plot of story and evaluation in each meeting. The technique used in collecting data is observation and speaking test. The success criteria in this study are if 75% of students are able to get a score ≥ 75 on the test conducted. This research results showed that it was found that the students’ ability improved in each cycle. It was proved by the data; the students’ score in speaking test I, the lowest score was 40 and the highest score was 60; the students’ score in speaking test II, the lowest score was 50 and the highest score was 80; the students’ score in speaking test III, the lowest score was 70 and the highest score was 90. In the speaking test I, there were haven’t student who got score ≥ 75. In the speaking test II, there were 42.30% (11 of 26 students) who got score ≥ 75. The percentage of the improvement scores from speaking test I to speaking test II were 42.30%. In the speaking test III, there were 80.76% (21 of 26 students) who got score ≥ 75. The percentage of the improvement scores from speaking test II to speaking test III were 38.46 %. So, it was concluded that describing pictures strategy can improve the speaking and it can be recommended in teaching speaking for the students of the eighth grade at MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar.
