Abstract

Zahro’. Fatma Fatimatuz. Student Registered Number 12203183241. Thesis. Speaking Difficulties Faced By the First Grade English Bilingual Students Face When Speaking English. English Education Department. Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Student speaking problems, speaking English In contrast to public schools with a regular education system, bilingual students are encouraged to have better English skills. This is because most of the material is delivered using English as the language of their attention. This can lead to the perception that most bilingual students are good English speakers. However, that does not mean that there are no students who are considered to have low English proficiency. Bilingual class students may also face problems in their English, especially in speaking skills. Therefore, this study is intended to determine the speaking difficulties faced by bilingual class. The research problem formulations are 1.) What are the speaking difficulties faced by English bilingual students at MAN 3 Blitar? 2.) What are the causes of difficulties in speaking English for bilingual students at MAN 3 Blitar? This study uses qualitative research. Before conducting the research the researcher conducted field observations by asking teachers and students about their opinions regarding bilingual students. According to some non-bilingual students, bilingual class students are students who are proficient in English. On the other hand, the researcher found that the bilingual class had less speaking scores. Then the researcher conducted research on the case. The researcher conducted class observations during the lesson and then conducted interviews with several students about the difficulties they faced in speaking English. The researcher made field notes on the results of observations and interviews. Based on the results of the study, students have problems in speaking, this problem consists of, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Some of the reasons students experience difficulties in speaking English are first, students rarely practice speaking English, Students are more dominant in speaking using their mother tongue. Second, they rarely bring a dictionary, this causes students to have difficulty translating words so that their vocabulary does not develop. Third, the teacher rarely corrects pronunciation and grammar in speaking, so they tend to make repeated mistakes. Finally, the teacher still uses the old learning method so that it does not attract students' interest in learning activities.
