Abstract

Rahmat, Richa Yuly Anita. Student Registered Number. 12203183128. 2023. The Effectiveness of Using YouTube Videos on The Students Speaking Skills of Seventh Grade at MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah University of Tulungagung. Advisor Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, YouTube Videos, Speaking Skills. The most important skill in communicating in English is speaking skill. To be able to communicate in English requires speaking practice. It can be very difficult to learn a language without practicing speaking it. The more often students speak English, will help overcome speaking problems. To make learning English easier, we need an effective strategy that can attract students' attention. The strategy used in learning to speak is a YouTube video. YouTube is one of the most used portals. YouTube offers a variety of content and benefits that can help teach English. The audio-visual video form will make it easier for students to convey the material. The formulation of the research problems are 1) What is the score of the students in speaking before being taught using YouTube videos? 2) What is the student's grade after being taught by using YouTube videos? 3) Is there a significant difference in student scores before being taught using YouTube videos and after being taught using YouTube videos? The purposes of this study were 1) To find out students' speaking scores before being taught using YouTube videos 2) To find out students' speaking scores after being taught using YouTube videos 3) To find out whether there were significant differences in students' speaking scores before being taught with using YouTube videos and after being taught using YouTube videos. The research method used is a pre-experimental research design using one group pre-test and post-test with a quantitative approach. The population of this study was all class VII students of MTs Assyafi'iyah Gondang Tulungagung for the 2022/2023 academic year. The sample is class VII A which consists of 31 students. The research instrument used pre-test and post-test. Data analysis used the Paired Sample T-test using IMB SPSS version 25. The results of the study showed that the value of students' speaking skills before being taught using YouTube videos was 57.97. While the students' scores after being taught using YouTube videos were 69.26. The p-value is significantly lower than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05) so it can be said that the null hypothesis is rejected and the analysis hypothesis is accepted, which means that there is effectiveness in using YouTube videos on students' speaking scores before and after treatment. These results indicate that there is a significant effect on students' speaking scores and YouTube videos can be used as alternative media to improve students' speaking skills.
