Abstract

Nabila, Firsty Surya. 2023. Registered Number, 12203193085. The Implementation of English Club as an Extracurricular in Students’ Speaking Practice at MAN 3 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S. S., M. Pd. Keywords: Implementation, English club, student ability, speaking practice. English Club is a place for students who want to improve their English skills. This is in line with the time limit for learning English in regular classes. With the English Club it is hoped that it can become an extracurricular activity in students’ speaking practice so that students have additional time to study English outside of regular class hours. The reseach questions are: 1) What the teacher strategies are used by English tutor in teaching English Club? 2) What the obstacles are faced by students in joining English Club? 3) What benefits have students found in joining English Club? Research Design in this study is descriptive qualitative with the subject used are a tutor and six students who have been obtained through surveys / questionnaires. In this study using observation and interviews as instruments to obtain data. The data analysis used in this study includes: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. As for checking the validity of data, researcher use credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The results of this study indicate that there are three stages of activities carried out by tutors in the course of the English Club series, namely Opening activities in the form of warming up, core activities with the main learning series, and closing activities which are usually in the form of activity reviews and question and answer moments. Apart from that, the English Club activities held at MAN 3 Tulungagung are too passive, especially in the aspect of speaking practice. This is also related to the method used by tutors, where tutors often use conventional methods when teaching. The other reason is because the tutor is not a graduate of English Education and the like, so this is also an obstacle for tutors to teach English classes considering that based on what the tutor has revealed, namely knowledge that is less related to theory and teaching models in English education. Even so, the benefit that has been found by tutors is that by joining this English Club, tutors can increase their knowledge in teaching English. In addition, the benefits found from the students' point of view are that even though the extracurricular English Club is too passive, especially in the aspect of speaking practice, at least they have better speaking skills than when they first joined the English Club. Interesting activities are also needed to be added during the English Club, such as games so that students will not get too bored when the activity takes place.
