ABSTRACT Layli, Nona Awalul. Student Registered Number. 2813123023. Improving Students’ Pronunciation by Using Reading Aloud of Seventh Grade at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords: Improving, Pronunciation, Reading Aloud There are many problems found in teaching English for Junior High School level. Especially, in teaching pronunciation. Many students consider that pronunciation is very difficult. Their mastery in pronunciation is very low. The students’ understanding about pronunciation are low. Besides, strategy that used by teacher was monotonous and make the students are not enjoyable. As a consequence, the students disliked to follow teaching and learning pronunciation in class. The researcher finds these problems from preliminary observation over there and get interview with the English teacher and also some of the students. To overcome students’ problem in teaching Pronunciation, the researcher used Reading Aloud as the strategy. The research problem of the research is “how can the students’ ability in pronunciation be improved by using reading aloud?” So, the purpose of the research is the researcher wants to improve students’ ability in pronunciation by using reading aloud. The subject of this study is the second semester of VII-B grade students at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru Tulungagung in the academic year 2015/2016. The researcher chooses VII-B class which consists of 36 students based on the result of preliminary observation over there. This research used Classrom Action Research which it designed by Kemmis and McTaggart and consist of two cycles. The study is done on April 11th, 2016 until May 7th, 2016. The criteria of success are (1) If 75% of students can get score 70 in pronunciation test; (2) The students are enjoyable in learning pronunciation by using Reading Aloud technique; (3) The students are easily in understanding material by using Reading Aloud technique. In this research, the researcher uses some instruments for collecting the data; they are test, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Based on the finding in preliminary study, cycle 1, and cycle 2 it can be proved that there was significant improvement. There are any students or 0% pass the test in preliminary-test. Then, there are 24 students or 69% pass the test in cycle 1, and there are 29 students or 83% pass the test in cycle 2. From the questionnaire distributed, it can be showed that the students are easier to understand the material and enjoy following the activity of teaching and learning pronunciation by using Reading Aloud. The result of this study implies that the implementing Reading Aloud as the strategy in teaching pronunciation can be used to improve students’ ability in pronunciation of seventh grade at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru Tulunggung. So, the researcher suggests to the English teachers to apply Reading Aloud strategy in several time for teaching and practicing pronunciation. Considering that Reading Aloud are effective and simple way to apply in teaching pronunciation.
