ABSTRACT Putro, Deri Bagus Handoyo, Students Registered Number. 12851021005. 2023. “The Use of Duolingo Application by University Students at Pondok Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang in English Language Learning”. Thesis. English Education Department. Islamic State Univeristy of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The 1 ix st advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya M.Pd, and The 2 nd Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, M.Pd. Keywords: Duolingo, Gamification, English Language Learning. This research was conducted by a phenomenon that occurs in the realization of learning English by using an application as media at pondok pesantren subulussalam plosokadang. Some of university students at pesantren subuluusalam was used an application in their learning English, the application called Duolingo. Duolingo is a games application that can be used for the students not only play but also to learn language. The main point of this game it can motivate the students to spend their free time to improve their English outside of the class. This makes the researcher want to conduct research about learning English by using Duolingo application. The formulation of the research problems in the writing of this thesis are: 1) How do the students use the Duolingo application on students learning English at Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang? 2) What is the contribution of using Duolingo on students learning English at Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang? The purpose of this study were: 1) To find out how the students do by using Duolingo application in learning English at Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang. 2) To find out the contribution of using Duolingo application by students in learning English at Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang. In this research, the research method included: 1) the research design in this study was a case study with qualitative appoarch, 2) the subject of this research are university students of Pesantren Subulussaslam who used Duolingo application in their learning English, 3) the technique of data collection was Semi Structured interview and documentation, 4) for analyzing the data, the researcher conducted some of steps include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings of the research have two categories, 1) how the students of Pesantren Subulussalam do in using Duolingo in their learning English. in this part the researcher found: the students have various time to play the application, the students have various duration to play and learn English by using Duolingo application and the common exercise that students chose in learning their English is translation exercise. 2) the contribution of Duolingo in learning English by students at Pesantren Subulussalam Plosokandang. the researcher found: thestudents could increase their ability in learning English, the students got a new vocabulary from translation exercise, the students could increase their listening skill by using listening technique from the Duolingo application, the application easier to make students know and understanding about English and Duolingo also taught the student in English starting from basic level until the advance level.
