The Effectiveness of Using Hand Puppet in Teaching Vocabulary at the Fourth Grade Student of Mi Tarbiyatul Athfal Pulotondo. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S, M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, teaching vocabulary, hand puppet. English has been taught at elementary school. It has been accepted in Indonesia in line with the government’s plan on the nine-year compulsory study. Based on the KTSP curriculum, English at elementary school level is taught as local content to serve the need of the local community. So they just learn the simple English patterns including vocabulary, grammar, etc. Vocabulary is central to English language teaching because without sufficient vocabulary students cannot understand others or express their own ideas. Using the puppet as an alternative medium of teaching young learners could be considered as the best way since it pleases them a lot. Furthermore, it is a precious resource to develop students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The research problems of this research were: 1) how is students’ mastery in vocabulary before being taught using hand puppet? 2) How is students’ mastery in vocabulary after being taught using hand puppet? 3) Is there any significant between students’ score in vocabulary before and after being taught using hand puppet as teaching media in teaching vocabulary at fourt grade of MI Tarbiyatul Athfal Pulotondo academic year 2015/2016.? The objectives of this research were: 1) to know students’ score in vocabulary before being taught using hand puppet. 2) To know students’ score in vocabulary after being taught using hand puppet. 3 To know the significant different between students’ mastery in vocabulary before and after being they taught using hand puppet as teaching media in teaching vocabulary at fourth grade of MI Tarbiyatul Athfal Pulotondo academic year 2015/2016. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was experimental research design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was all fourth grader of MI Tarbiyatul Athfal Pulotondo, 3) the sample was fourth grade consisting of 24 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T-test. The result showed that: 1) the mean score of students pre-test conducted before being taught by hand puppet was 72.41667, 2) the mean score of students post-test conducted before being taught by hand puppet was 82.1667, 3) there is a significance different score between students vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by hand puppet at fourth grade of MI Tarbiyatul Athfal Pulotondo academic year 2015/2016. From the result above, it could be seen that the value of tscore was 11.800, whereas ttable with significant level 5% is 1.714. It can be seen that “t” with significant level 5% and degree of freedom 23 is 1.714, meanwhile the tscore is 11.800. The conclusion, tscore is greater than ttable. So, the null hypothesis (Ho) from this research is there is no significant difference between student’s vocabulary mastery being taught by using puppet and are not being taught by using puppet is rejected. Then, the alternative (Ha) from this research is there is significant difference between student’s vocabulary mastery being taught by using puppet and are not being taught by using puppet is accepted.
