Abstract
English is a vital communication tool for surviving in all aspects of life. English is playing a major role in many sectors, including medicine, engineering, education, advanced studies. English language is important in this era of globalization. Teachers should focus on boosting students' speaking confidence in speaking English. Students can learn English in variety way, but teachers can optimize their strategies for speaking. This reasearch was obtained by doing interview and observation directly on teacher and students who participated in teacher’s strategy in teaching speaking at MA DARUL HIKMAH TULUNGAGUNG. The observations was conducted in the class, The interview was conducted in out of the class. The interview for the teachers include what the strategy, how to implement the startegy, the advantage and disadvantage, interview for students include if can’t follow the teachers strategies,and are the startegies is eeffective. The problem formulations in this study are:(1)What are teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking to encourage students self-confidence to speak english at MA DARUL HIKMAH TULUNGAGUNG? (2)How do students responds to the strategies applied by the the teachers at MA DARUL HIKMAH TULUNGAGUNG?. The objective of the study are: (1)To know What are teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking to encourage students self-confidence to speak english and How do students responds to the strategies applied by the the teachers at MA DARUL HIKMAH TULUNGAGUNG. This study aims to determine student perceptions at MA DARUL HIKMAH TULUNGAGUNG with descriptive qualitative methods. This method uses observation and interviews. From the results of this study, it was found that teachers use 5 strategies: reading aloud, role-playing, discussion, drilling, and Telling stories From the 5 strategies, the teacher optimizes the strategy by instructing students to read texts simultaneously or independently, adding role�plays so that students are more confident in understanding characters with correct pronunciation, and also using discussions in one class or small groups so that students can provide good feedback from the results of their performance. From the strategy used by the teacher, it can be seen that the enthusiasm of the students and their confidence to speak English in class and outside the class.
