Abstract
ABSTRACT The thesis entitled “Cognitive Process of Olympiad Students In Solving Geometry Problem Using Information Processing Theory Based on Personality Type” writen by Ani Rohma, Register Number 128512203008, Advisor : Dr. Maryono, M. Pd., and Dr. Ummu Sholihah, S.Pd., M. Si. Keywords: Cognitive Process, Olympiad, Personality Type. Student’s cognitive process can be discorned through the steps students take in solving a problem. Problem solving is the process of applying previously acquired concepts to new and different situations. Each student responds to stimuli differently, which affects how students are able to solve problems. Olympians are familiar with higher-order thinking issues. There are differences in cognitive processes between students with extrovert and introverted personality types. This also happened to the Olympic students at Al Azhaar Islamic Middle School Tulungagung. The theory that can be used to determine students cognitive processes is information processing theory. Cognitive components in information processing are attention, perception, retrieval, rehearsal and encoding. The aims of this research are 1) Describing the cognitive process of the students at the National Olympiad with extrovert personality types in solving geometric problems using information processing theory, 2) Describing the cognitive process of national olympiad students with introvert personality types in solving geometric problems using information processing theory. The research uses a qualitative approach with the nature of case study research. Methods of data collection through observation, personality type questionnaires, test, interviews, documentation. The research subjects consisted of 2 olympians with extrovert personality types and 2 olympians with introverted personality types at Azhaar Islamic Middle School Tulungagung. The data analysis used is reduction, presentation and inference drawing. The results of the study showed that, 1) The cognitive process of extroverted personality type students begins with a stimulus in the form of questions that are entered in the sensory register. The process of attention is shown when understanding the problem so the perception arises. Students realize their perceptions when compiling a problem-solving plan short term memory by carrying out the retrieval process.During the rerieval and rehearshal process student experienced forgotten loss and retrieval failure on certain concepts due to inaccuracy. Encoding occurs every time stop processing information. 2) The cognitive processes of student with introverted personality type is characterized by selective attention as a form of response to a stimulus in the form of a question. During the retrieval, rehearshal and encoding process, students can construct knowledge, modify and offer alternative solutions with precise and through of specific concepts. The cognitive process that is going through is not just remembering the problem-solving using a solution method.
