Abstract

Liya, Sherlyi Indah Ayu Siska. Student Registered Number. 12203193049. 2023. The Effectiveness of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) to Enhance Students' Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text Assisted by Poster Media at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. Thesis. English Education Department Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M. Pd. Keyword: Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text, Poster. Reading is a language skill that must be possessed by every individual to expand knowledge, experience, improve thinking skills, and achieve progress. It takes an understanding in reading activities so that it can understand the meaning and information from the text itself. So, the teacher must have the right strategy that will be applied in the teaching and learning process to help students improve reading comprehension. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is a combined strategy in teaching reading that is used to improve students' reading comprehension by performing several strategies, including; Preview, Click and Clunk, Get the Gist, and Wrap Up. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) asks students to try to understand a text cooperatively or in groups and actively socialize when learning takes place. In addition to strategy selection, learning media is also important to use as a support during the learning process. In introducing descriptive text, teachers sometimes facilitate students with the help of visual media posters to stimulate students to feel enthusiastic and focused. The problem in this study is whether there is any significant effect of applying Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) to enhance students' reading comprehension of descriptive text assisted by poster media at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. So, this study aims to find out whether there is a significant effect of applying Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) to enhance students' reading comprehension of descriptive text assisted by poster media at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. This study used a pre- experimental research design using one group pretest-posttest with a quantitative approach. The population of this study were all eighth-grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri, which numbered 75 students. The sample of this study was class 8B (20 students). The instrument used was a multiple-choice test. The researcher conducted this study in 5 meetings where the first meeting began with a pre-test, then continued treatment for 3 meetings and a post-test at the last meeting. The researcher analysed the data using IBM SPSS version 22.0 for Windows. The results of this research indicate that Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is an effective strategy to enhance students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts assisted by poster media at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. The effectiveness is shown from the increase in students' average scores in the pre-test and post-test. From 46.25 with the poor category increased to 85.25 with the good category. Then the paired sample t test results show a significance value of 0.000 and smaller than 0.050 (0.000 < 0.050), in other words H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary scores between before and after applying the Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) learning strategy, so Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is indicated to be effective to enhance students' reading comprehension.
