English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr.Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S.,M.Pd. Keywords: Improving, peaking skills, Small Group Discussion Speaking skills are used as one of the benchmarks of achievement in English because speaking is a productive ability in a very complex oral form. Students in the nineth grade of MTsN 1 Blitar face several problems in the speaking learning process. Most students experience problems in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, as well as grammar. As well as students feeling less confident and feeling afraid of making mistakes when speaking. For this reason, the researcher used the SGD technique to overcome problems faced by students. The formulation of the problem in this study is:“How to improve the nineth grade students speaking skills by using Small Group Discussion Technique at MTsN 1 Blitar? And the purpose of this study is: to find out how to use the SGD technique to improve students’ speaking skills in eighth grade in MTsN 1 Blitar. Research methods: 1) the design of the study was a model classroom action research from Kemmis and McTaggart (1988), (2) the research subject was an Nineth grade 3 student at MTsN 1 Blitar, (3) this research was carried out in 2 cycles, each cycle consisted of 3 meetings. The research procedure of each cycle consists of planning, implementing, observing, reflecting, (4) the success criteria in this study are if 75% of students are able to get a score of ≥ 75 on the tests conducted. The success criteria have not been achieved in cycle 1 because students In cycle 1 the average score of students is 74. A total of 58% of students passed the test and 42% of students failed the test.so pass the test are less than 75% so cycle 2 needs to be implemented. In cycle 2, the average score of students is 80. A total of 84% of students passed the test and 16% of students failed the test. The success criteria in cycle 2 have been achieved as more than 75% of students passed the test. So the study was stopped in cycle 2. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the implementation of the SGD Technique was successful. And the SGD Technique can be used as an alternative media in the learning process to increase confidence in speaking English for students.
