Abstract

In the learning English process, reading skill plays an important role. Reading is something crucial and indispensable for the students because the success of their study depends on the greater part of their ability to read. If their reading comprehension is poor they are very likely to fail in their study or at least they will have difficulty in making progress. In this circumstance, the teachers is recommended using an appropriate strategy to support learning process of reading skill and made the students more interested with the learning process of reading skill. One of strategies that is recommended to use by teacher is Think Aloud Strategy. Think aloud is a technique in which students verbalize their thoughts as they read, in order to create understanding of the reading texts. The formulation of research problem is to know the effect of Think Aloud Strategy toward students reading skill of the 8th grade at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Tulungagung. On the other hand, the objective of this research is to find out find out whether think aloud strategy can effect students reading skill or not. The research design was used quasi-experimental research design by using two group experimental class and control class with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all eight grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Tulungagung. The sample was VIII B as a control class and VIII C as an experimental class which the total 43 students. The research instrument was using pre-test and post-test. The data analysis using Mann-Whitney U-test.in IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 version. The finding showed that Think Aloud Strategy was effective in teaching reading skill at the eight grade students’ of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Tulungagung It could be seen from the mean result of post-test scores in the experimental class which was 89.05. While in the control class, the average score of post-test was 62.05. In addition, the significant p-value was smaller than the significant level (0,000<0,05). From the result, it can be concluded that using Think Aloud Strategy was effective towards students’ reading skill.
