Keywords: Effectiveness, Shop-n-Spree, Vocabulary Mastery The main step for studying language especially English is studying vocabulary. Vocabulary is very needed to get understanding of English in four skills of language such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. In the textbook for first grade of Junior High School level, especially in KTSP curriculum, there is material about things in living room, bedroom, and bathroom so that students should memorize the vocabulary. To increase students’ motivation especially for beginner level in learning vocabulary, teacher should choose good strategy. The right strategy to teach vocabulary for beginner level is used “Shop-n-Spree” game. This game is designed to create students’ interest to learn vocabulary in English by looking for the items on the shopping list wanted by costumers. Therefore, this research is aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using Shop-n-Spree game toward students’ vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) how is the students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game? 2) how is the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game? 3) is there any significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game? The objectives of the research were: 1) to know the students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game 2) to know the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game 3) to know whether there is significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using “Shop-n-Spree” game. This research is experimental design with quantitative approach. Researcher used pre-experimental design in the form of one-group pretest and posttest. The population of this research was all students of the first grade of SMPN 3 Kedungwaru. The sample was VII D students consisting of 34 students. The instruments used in this research were vocabulary test (pretest and posttest). The data was analyzed by using T-test. The result showed that the mean of students’ achievement on vocabulary scores before being taught by using Shop-n-Spree game was 58. While the mean of students’ achievement on vocabulary scores after being taught by using Shop-n-Spree game was 79. The T-score was 9.285, whereas T-table with significance level 5% was 2.042. So, T-score was greater than T-table. It means that Ha which states that there is significant difference between students’ score before and after being taught by using Shop-n-Spree game is accepted. Whereas, H0, which states that there is no significant difference between students’ score before and after being taught by using Shop-n-Spree game is rejected. In other words, Shop-n-Spree game can be used as an alternative media to teach vocabulary to the first grade of Junior High School level.
