The Effectiveness of Brochure toward Students Reading Comprehension Skill in Descriptive Text of Eight Grade Students at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol in Academic year 2015/2016. Thesis. Reading is the process of reconstructing the writer’s idea written in a text or printed symbols based on the reader’s background knowledge and experience. In reading activity, we are not only reading the text, but also trying to understand what we are reading. Now, students are not able to understand the text when they find some unfamiliar words in a paragraph, however, if the teacher can present the suitable media related to the topic, the text will be more interesting and easily to understand. Actually, there are many media which can be used in teaching reading, one of it is using Brochure. Brochure is a short booklet or pamphlet. It is thin, boundless which usually gives information about forthcoming events, place, product, holiday place etc. The problems proposed in this research are: (1) How is the students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text before being taught by using English brochure in the eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol? (2) How is the students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text after being taught by using English brochure in the eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol? (3) Is there any significant different between before and after being taught by using English Brochure in the eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol? Purposes of this research are: (1) To know students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text before being taught by using English brochure in the eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. (2) To know students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text after being taught by using English brochure in the eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. (3) To find out if there is any significant different before and after being taught by using English brochure in eighth grade of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. The research design in this study is pre-experimental research that uses one group pre-test and post-test design with quantitative approach. The population of this study was all of eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. The sample was VIII-C class consisting of 32 students. The research instrument was used test. The data analysis of this study was using T test. The result showed that there was a significant different between the result of the pretest and posttest score. The mean score of the post-test was higher (77,875) than pre-test (65,125). The t-test value was higher than the value of t-table (14.904 > 1.644). It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) saying that there is significant different score of the students’ reading comprehension skill in descriptive text before and after being taught by using Brochure of eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) saying that there is no significant different score of the students’ reading comprehension skill in descriptive text before and after being taught by using Brochure of eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol was rejected. It could be concluded that Brochure as a teaching media was effective used in teaching reading.
