Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd Keywords: problem, writing, thesis Mastering academic writing is important subject for university students especially who conducting the final project as thesis, report, essay, etc. As one of the requirement to fulfill in degree in bachelor, university students must be able to write a good thesis. However, writing a good thesis still becomes a problem for the students. The research describes Student’ Problems in Writing Thesis at English Study Program of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The research problems proposed in this study are 1) What are the students’ problems in writing a thesis? 2) What is the dominant problem toward students in writing thesis? 3) What are the factor affecting student’s problem in writing thesis? The researcher applied the Descriptive Quantitative as Method Design. The instrument used were questionnaire and interview to collecting the data. The population of this research is the students eight semester of English Study Program in UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung who started to write a thesis and who have completed the thesis. The researcher took 65 number of students as a sample with used Random Technique Sampling. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0. The result of research showed that (1) there are 33.3% students have difficulties in personality factors. (2) 29.7% students have difficulties in sociocultural factors, and (3) 36.9% students have difficulties in linguistic factors. From the three factors it is concluded that linguistic factor is the highest difficulties faced by English students. While through the interview the researchers discovered the factors affecting students' problems in writing theses. The first factor is personality factors they were lack of self-motivation. The second, Sociocultural factors that covered is lack of communication between students and supervisors and the difficulty of understanding thesis writing standards from universities. The third factor is linguistic factors. They were difficult in arranging sentences into coherent paragraphs due to lack of vocabulary and students' lack of mastery of grammar.
