Abstract

Keywords: Pragmatics, speech act, Searle, film, Raya And The Last Dragon Speech acts are one of an important role in our daily lives and are inseparable from human interactions. As social creatures, humans rely on communication with others to survive. Whether expressing our emotions, conveying our intentions, or seeking assistance, speech acts are essential. With the current widespread interest in movies, this research focuses on analyzing the speech acts employed by a character named "Raya" in the film "Raya and The Last Dragon." Released on March 5, 2021, this Walt Disney production was created by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The formulation of the research question was: 1) what are the speech act in the film Raya and the Last Dragon? 2) How are speech act expressed in the film Raya and the Last Dragon? The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with the film "Raya and the Last Dragon" as the primary source. Data were collected from dialogues between the main character and supporting characters, focusing on spoken language in specific scenes. Listening, reading, and note-taking techniques were utilized for data collection. The findings revealed four types of speech acts, as defined by Searle's theory: representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. Representative speech acts were frequently employed to establish the truth of various elements within the narrative. Directive speech acts were used by the main character to influence his friends' actions in specific situations. Commissive speech acts were observed in actions intended to shape the future narrative, while expressive speech acts focused on conveying inner feelings. Overall, this research sheds light on the speech acts present in "Raya and the Last Dragon" and provides insights into how language is used in communication, emphasizing the importance of context and pragmatics
