Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, MP.d. Keywords: conflicts, plot, character. In analyzing the novel the researcher find out the many problems which were dealt by government in economic and education aspect that happened in this day. Conflict make the main character be the main point because from the conflict main character show his/ her effort to solve the problem, a wisdom and fervency of main characters are appear. Conflict within a piece may also be central to the author's view of life or the point, he or she is trying to change a bad life. So conflict is the heart of any plot. In continuation, plot is important elements to build the story, in all of story through exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Plot has continuation story that make its interesting. Makes the readers are curious to read next story. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What kinds of conflict are found in the main character in Angie Kilbane’s Novel a “The Rainbow Troops”? 2) What types of plot by time are used by main character’s conflict in Angie Kilbane’s Novel a “The Rainbow Troops”? The objectives of this study were: 1) To describe kinds of conflict are found of main character in Angie Kilbane’s Novel a “The Rainbow Troops”, 2) To describe types of plot by time are used by main character’s conflict in Angie Kilbane’s Novel a “The Rainbow Troops, also this objects of the research the researcher only two objects that suitable with the problems above. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was library research with literary approached, that was set out to find possible information from the literary books or article. It was discovered through looked out the field and then searching literary book, 2) the object of research was the novel Rainbow Troops by Angie Kilbane, 3) the main data were sentences that indicates the conflicts, it was in the form of utterances/ dialogue of characters, and the one that indicated the plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution, 4) to collect the data using of primary and secondary data, both of them to make the data in deeply analysis, 5) this research using documentary technique to collect the data, vii and also using credibility and dependability to make the data is trustworthiness the purpose was to support the arguments, 6) in analyzing the data using of qualitative method: organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing. The result showed that there were 71 data in analyzing the main character’s conflict in the Rainbow Troops by Angie Kilbane, actually many conflicts between two main characters; Lintang and Ikal in that story, those were extrinsic conflict: 65 data and intrinsic conflicts: 6 data, and also a plot; episodic plot. It is one kinds of plot that is discovered by researcher in that story. Here, main characters got problem in society, economic and education aspects; the struggle in education to get high economic level. The researcher hopes that through analyze the story it makes easy to another researcher in using another topic but in same research aspect. Because this aspect of story happens in our life, it is real story to forward Indonesian’s education, and motivate the young generation to help forward the Indonesia nation.
