Key words: Discourse analysis, grammatical cohesive devices This research is intended to analyze the misuse of grammatical cohesion found on argumentative essay composed by the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Tulungagung. This study deal more about discourse analysis. The researcher use Halliday and Hasan theory as main theory and other theory as the addition. The formulation of research problems were; 1) What types of cohesive devices are incorrectly used in argumentative essay composed by fourth semester students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung? 2) What is the frequency in each type of cohesive devices that are incorrectly used by the students in their argumentative essay? The objectives of this research were; 1) The researcher would like to investigate the cohesive devices are incorrectly used in argumentative essay compossed by the fourth semester students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung. 2) The researcher would like to find out the frequency occurrences in each type of cohesive devices that are incorrectly used in argumentative essay composed by the fourth semester students of English department IAIN Tulungagung. This research uses quantitative research with survey design. The data source was the fourth semester students’ argumentative essay writing composition of fourth semester of English department students at IAIN Tulunggung. The data were any misuse of grammatical cohesive devices found in the students’ argumentative essay writing. The technique of data collection was document analysis. This study found that there was 474 incorrectly used of cohesive devices identified in 36 students’ argumentative essay. They were inappropriate use of reference 70, 89% (336), which included personal reference 43, 88% (208), demonstrative reference 25, 95% (123), and comparative reference 1, 05% (5). Incorrect on the use substitution is 0, 42% (2), include nominal substitution 0, 21% (1) and verbal substitution 0, 21% (1). The results of incorrect use of conjunctions, 28, 69% (136), which included additive conjunction 5, 70% (27), adversative conjunction 10, 55% (50), causal conjunction 11, 81% (56), and temporal conjunction 0, 63% (3). The dominant frequency of incorrectly grammatical cohesive devices that occurred in students’ writing was reference (personal reference).
