Abstract

Writing requires several processes to think and develop ideas to become a text. One of the alternative methods that can be used to express ideas in writing text is Mind Mapping. Mind Mapping is a teaching method that teaches students by expressing with ideas into clear charts. This study was intended to test whether or not Mind Mapping Method was effective to improve students’ writing skill in Descriptive Text. The formulation of the research problem was: 1) Is there any significant difference scores in writing Descriptive Text of the students’ before and after being taught by using Mind Mapping Method of second grader at SMP Muallimin Wonodadi? The purpose of the research is: 1) To know wether there is any significant difference scores in writing Descriptive Text of the students’ before and after being taught by using Mind Mapping Method of second grader at SMP Muallimin Wonodadi. Research method: 1) The research design used was pre- experimental one-group pre- test post-test using quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study was all students of the second grade at SMP Muallimin that consisted of 130 students, 3) The sample was students of II A class consisted of 33 students, 4) The research instrument used was a test which included a pre-test and post-test in writing descriptive text, 5) The technique of data analysis was paired sample T-test on SPSS 22.0. The result of the study showed that Mind Mapping Method was effective used to improve the students’ writing skill in Descriptive Text. From the result of paired sample T-test, it was found that there was significant difference scores on students’ writing descriptive text before and after being taught by using Mind Mapping. The mean value before teaching by using Mind Mapping was 63.9394. Meanwhile, the mean value after teaching by using Mind Mapping was 80.3030. The result of paired sample T-test analysis showed that the number of significance value was 0.000 and it was smaller than α = 0.05. So, the Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
