Keywords: effectiveness, Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) using Hyponymy Technique, vocabulary mastery Vocabulary is a very important English component to teach. Vocabulary is a major part of language proficiency, which also forms the foundation for the learner’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen. Without vocabulary, it is impossible for students to be able to speak or write English. Regarding to the importance of vocabulary, the technique it must be interesting by for example using a certain technique. One of the effective techniques used by the researcher to improve students’ vocabulary mastery is Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) using Hyponymy technique. Therefore, this research is intended to determine the effectiveness of Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) using Hyponymy technique towards students vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol. The formulation of the research problem was: “Is there any significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) using Hyponymy technique in the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol?” This research used quantitative approach with experimental design. The population of this research was all of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol in the academic year 2023/2024. The sample for this research was the students in VII H class in SMPN 1 Sumbergempol, consisting of 33 students. The instrument used in this research was a vocabulary test. The stages carried out by the researcher were pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Then the data are analyzed using Paired Sample t-test with the SPSS 26 version. The results of this research showed that the use of Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) using Hyponymy technique was effective. It was shown by the results of statistical computation that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results. The pre-test mean score was 18.00 and the post-test mean score was 21.70. The mean score of the post-test is higher than the pre-test mean score. The statistical computation results of the value of Sign. (2-tailed) is 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05 (0.000<0.05) meaning that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
