Abstract
Writing is one of the four skills in learning English that students must master. In writing, there are various types of text genres that students must master, one of which is writing descriptive text. However, during the learning process of writing descriptions in English, the teacher must choose the right strategy. One of them is by implementing outdoor learning strategy which can help teachers to improve students' abilities in writing descriptive text. The formulation of the problem in this research is “Is there any significant different scores on students’ writing descriptive text with and without using outdoor learning strategy at the class VII students of SMPN 1 Ngunut?”. The purpose of this research is “To find out significant differences in the scores on students’ writing descriptive text with and without using outdoor learning strategy at the class VII students of SMPN 1 Ngunut”. The method used in this research is a quasi-experiment using two classes, a control class and an experiment class with a quantitative approach. The population used in this research was all class VII students at SMPN 1 Ngunut. The sample selection used non-probability sampling and obtained a sample of class VII F as a control class consisting of 36 students with a composition of 19 male and 17 female and class VII H as an experimental class consisting of 35 students with a composition of 16 male and 19 female. The instruments used are pre-test and post-test. This research analyzes data using the t-test. Research findings showed that the implementation of outdoor learning strategies is effective in teaching writing descriptive text for class VII students at SMPN 1 Ngunut. This can be seen from the post-test scores between students in the control class and students in the experimental class. In the control class the lowest score was 74, the highest score was 91 and the mean score of 80.75. Meanwhile, the experimental class was much higher with the lowest score of 77, the highest score of 94, and the mean score of 84.26. Post-test scores between students in the control class and students in the experimental class. It can be seen that the experimental class taught using the outdoor learning strategy obtained higher scores than the control class taught using the conventional strategy. Then the assumed value of equal variances Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000<0.05, so based on the decision-making rules in the independent t test, the researcher concludes that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the scores of students writing descriptive text with and without being taught using outdoor learning strategies at the VII grader of SMPN 1 Ngunut.
