The Correlation Between Vocabulary Mastery and Reading Comprehension of the Fourth Semester of English Department Students in UIN SATU TULUNGAGUNG. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. University State Islamic of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: correlation, vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension Reading is defined as a cognitive process that involves decoding symbols to arrive at meaning. It is an active process of constructing meanings of words, requiring both simple and complex components. The reader must have a base knowledge of the symbols that create the language, as well as a vocabulary in that language, and an understanding of the grammar rules. The study emphasizes the importance of vocabulary in reading comprehension. It notes that vocabulary plays a vital role in enhancing reading skills, as it helps students understand the meaning of words in context and avoid misunderstandings. The study also underscores the significance of vocabulary in language learning, stating that it is one of the most important skills for successful language learning, especially in English education. The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any correlation between students’ Vocabulary Mastery and Their Reading Comprehension Achievement of the Fourth Semester of the English Department at Universitas Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung?”. The study belonged to correlational design with quantitative approach. The population was all 4th semeseter students of English Department at UIN SATU Tulungagung in the academic year of 2023/2024 consisting 200 students. The sample of this research was 38 students by using simple random sample technique. The research instruments were vocabulary test and reading test. The data of this research were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS 16. The correlation value between students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension is (0,760). The rtable from the total of respondents 38 in significance level 1% is 0,413. It showed that the index value of rtable (0,413) is lowest than index value of rxy (0,760) or rxy > rtable. It means that the null hypothesis is accepted that can be concluded there is correlation between student’s vocabulary and their reading skill.
