Abstract

Speech acts are utterances that contain an action in them. This means that when a speaker says something, the speaker also does something. Moreover, by uttering an utterance, the speaker has aims and objectives that must be achieved by the speech partner. In a film, speech acts are definitely very necessary, so researchers want to examine various types of speech acts through the main characters in a film. Researchers chose the film Detachment because this film has an interesting story that describes how life and teaching and learning exist around us. There are various messages that can be taken from this film. The research problems in this study were, what type of speech act did the main character use in the film Detachment by Tony Kaye, and the second was, what was the dominant type of speech act used by the main character in the film Detachment (2011) by Tony Kaye. Meanwhile, the aims of the research were to find the type of speech act used by the main character in the film Detachment (2011) by Tony Kaye and to find the dominant type of speech act used by the main character in the film Detachment by Tony Kaye?. The research design for this study was a qualitative research design using content analysis methods. This method was used because the data source used in this research was dialogue transcripts accompanied by images of several scenes from the Detachment movie. Some of the pictures were taken from the scenes containing speech which showed several types of speech acts used by Henry Barthes as the main character in the Detachment movie. The results of this research show that all types of speech acts were used by Henry Barthes, by the number for each types as followed: one utterance of verdictive, twenty-two utterances of exercitives, one utterance of commisive, two utterances of behabitive, and seven utterances of expositive. From the results of this analysis, it was found that the excertive category, by total number of sixty-four utterances, was the type which the most frequently used by the main character to express the aim and purpose of his speech.
