The Effectiveness of Teaching Reading Comprehension Through Small Group Discussion Technique of Tenth Grade Students at SMAN 1 Tulungagung in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis. English Department. Keywords: effectiveness, teaching reading comprehension, small group discussion In learning reading comprehension the students at SMAN 1 Tulungagung get difficulties in comprehending the text, because they has bad reading habit and the teacher still uses conventional teaching techniques to teach reading which it make the students difficult in comprehending a text and answer the question based on the text. Teaching reading comprehension can be taught by using Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique which is considered appropriate to increase the students reading comprehension. Therefore, the researcher is interested in finding out the effect of SGD technique in teaching reading comprehension for the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Tulungagung in academic year 2016/2017. Thus, the research aim at knowing whether SGD technique is effective to increase the students’ reading comprehension. The research method used in this research is pre-experimental research design with the population students of the tenth grade at SMAN 1 Tulungagung that consist of seven classes (250 students). The sample of this research is class of X-5 consist of 35 students that are selected by means non probility sampling. Meanwhile, the instrument is test which is used to conduct pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analyze by using Paired Samples T test with SPSS Windows 16.0. This study reveals that there are two important points: 1) The students’ mean in teaching reading comprehension before being taught by using SGD technique is 61.57 and after being taught by using SGD technique is 83.71. So that the difference is 22.14. 2) In addition with T test analysis that used by researcher, the result of significant value is 0.000 with the significant level is 0.05 and the result of tcount is 14.528 with ttable is 1.69. It presents that the difference value between tcount and ttable is 12.838. The above mention different mean and value indicated that SGD technique is strongly effective in teaching reading comprehension to increase reading comprehension. It is able to be pedagogically implemented in teaching reading comprehension of tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Tulungagung. This research only used one group pre-test and post-test it is suggested to conduct the same study by using true-experimental or quasi experimental.
