Abstract

Cohesion and coherence are important factors in creating comprehensive text. It is because Cohesion makes text between text connected while coherence refers to the relationship of ideas between texts. Because of the importantce of cohesion and coherence in creating text, someone must be able to provide the right writing to get maximum understand. The research aims to discover and discribe (1) How is cohesion built in thesis abstracts written by Master Program students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung and (2) How is coherence built in thesis abstracts written by Master Program students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung? The research design method of this study is a descriptive qualitative with library research. The data source of this research is six theses with different research designs: two Qualitative theses, two Quantitative theses, two Research and development (RnD). The Data in this research is sentences certainly cohesion devices and coherence in abstract thesis written by Master Program at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The analysis used was method of the (1) organization of abstracts contents used APA (2010) theory which stated that the contents of an abstract are problem, participant, method, finding, conclusion and keywords. The other requirements of abstract are total paragraph and limitation words, (2) The coherence in students’ abstracts was adopted by Eggins (2004) theory which is Reiteration theme, Linier theme Split rheme (3) In cohesion analysis, the researcher used Halliday and Hasan (1976) theory. The result of this study that not all part of cohesion (lexical and grammatical) entered in this abstract. From lexical only entered part of reiteration which repetition, synontm, superordinate and genaral word. Further, grammatical cohesion is reference which personal reference, demonstrative and comprative and for conjunction which conjunction and subordinating. For the next result part of coherence only used Reiteration theme/ Constant pattern and Linier theme/ Zigzig pattern. For the next result, the pattern of coherence in qualitative mostly used constant pattern and for quantiative mostly used Zigzag pattern.
