Pratiwi, Kusumaningtyas Dyah. 2024. EFL Students’ Reading Motivation and their Preferences in Reading Materials. English Language Education Department. Magister Program of Post Graduate Program of Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd., and Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords : Motivation, Reading Motivation, Reading Preference, Reading Material Motivation is seen as the desire that moves and directs human behavior, including learning behavior. Students who are motivated, they were made reactions that direct them to achieve goals and was reduce the tension generated by the energy within them. Students who have preference or tendency in reading material will be more motivated to read the reading material continuously. It makes them curious and want to know more. The focus of this research were (1) What are the types of students’ motivation in reading (2) What is the level of student’s motivation in reading (3) How are the students’ preferences in reading materials based on their type and level of motivation (1) knowing the types of students’ motivation in reading (2) knowing the level of students’ motivation in reading (3) describing the students’ preferences in reading materials based on their type and level of motivation. This study was used mixed method approach, and the design was explanatory design. The research was conducted in UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. in collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire and interview. There were 71 students as the respondents of the questionnaires. Moreover, there were 6 students as the informants for interviews. The categories of informants were 1 student from extrinsic high motivation, 1 student from extrinsic average motivation, 1 student from extrinsic low motivation, 1 student from intrinsic high motivation, 1 student from intrinsic average motivation, and 1 student from intrinsic low motivation. The result of this study was as follows: (1) students’ reading motivation mostly dominated by extrinsic motivation (2) the level of students’ reading motivation dominated by the students who have average level of reading motivation (3) 3 students they were the students with categories extrinsic high, intrinsic average, and intrinsic low chose online academic reading material as their preferences, meanwhile 3 students they were the students with categories extrinsic average, extrinsic low, and intrinsic high chose online non-academic reading material as their preferences. The conclusion of this study were most of the students dominated by their extrinsic motivation, most of the student have average level of reading motivation, prefenrences in reading materials were online academic and online non-academic reading materials. This study suggested for the next researchers who were interested in students’ reading motivation and reading preferences, the results of this study could help the next researchers to conduct the future research. This research has many limitations. It was better if the next researchers can make better research in the future related with reading motivation and reading preferences.
