Abstract

ABSTRACT Ningrum, Nurhalisa Widya. Students Registered Numbered. 12203183287. 2024. The Effectiveness of Using Internet Memes Towards Students’ Writing Achievement in Descriptive Text at the Seventh Grade of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Internet Memes, Writing Achievement, Descriptive Text Writing is the most complex skill in English, it is very important for students to learn writing so that they can express their ideas and feelings in writing. One of the texts that seventh graders must master is descriptive text. To measure their ability can be seen from their writing achievement. However, teachers must choose suitable strategy to improve their achievement, especially in the media used for teaching. Internet Memes are the series written pictures that can be an alternative media to teach descriptive text. Through the application of this media, students can more easily create descriptive text. The formulation of research problem in this study is: “Is there any significant difference score on students' writing achievement in descriptive text with and without being taught by using Internet Memes at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol?” The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is a significant difference score on students' writing achievement in descriptive text before and after being taught using Internet Memes as media. The researcher used a quasi-experimental research design with a quantitative approach. The population of this study was all the seventh graders students of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol. The sample of this research involved two classes, VII A as the experimental group and VII B as the control group and each consisting of 36 students. This research used purposive sampling. The instrument used in this research was a writing test. The calculation of data analysis used Independent Sample T-test. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group was 79.00 and the mean score of the control group was 70.81. Furthermore, the result of the Independent Sample T-test calculation (Sig 2-tailed) showed a significant value was 0.000. This means that the significant value (Sig 2-tailed) is smaller than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). From the result of significance value (Sig 2-tailed), it can be said that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference score on students' writing achievement in descriptive text before and after being taught using Internet Memes as media at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol.
